Mackay is on the eastern coast of Australia, on the Pioneer River. It is near the beautiful Whitsunday Islands and has a subtropical climate.

The city is known for its Art Deco inspired architecture, and home to the Mackay Festival of Arts held annually throughout July. The Marina Village, next to the harbour, is a favourite spot for swimming at Harbour Beach and eating at the many restaurants and cafes, or DIY lunch on the free barbeques at the historic Mulherin Park.
